Eco-Friendly
The new Palmscale 6.0 comes with rechargeable batteries. This saves you hundreds of dollars during the lifetime of the scale plus it saves the environment. Did you know that disposable batteries cause significant damage to the environment - especially precious drinking water? Every time it rains, water percolates through the volumes of garbage at the landfill. In the process, this water leaches heavy metals and other hazardous materials from such common discards such as batteries. The resulting liquid, or "leachate", eventually collects at the base of a landfill, often in considerable quantities. If and when it leaks from the landfill and reaches the water table, it can seriously contaminate ground water. With over half of all people dependent on ground water for their drinking water needs, contaminated ground water constitutes a significant problem. Rechargeable portable electronics are the weigh of the future, and as always My Weigh is leading the weigh.

Accurate, Reliable, and Fast
The new Palmscale 6.0 has upgraded microprocessors for faster speed.Enhanced digital filtration provides extraordinary performance andstability in the most compromising environments. This scale is soaccurate and reliable that we back it with a Lifetime/30 yearwarranty! The PS6 is powered by a long lasting 'MemoryFree' Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable battery.

Durable
The Palmscale is tough. Its rubberized case, rubber mounted components, rubber side grips and thick stainless steel tray are built fordurability. Each scale comes complete with a premium protective pouchwith a Velcro enclosure.

Equipped with the Tools You Need
The Palmscale's Stainless steel tray is perfect for precious jewels andgunpowder. You can double its size with a large removable plasticexpansion tray or TRIPLE it's size with the large expansion bowl(pictured below) for those loose metals or Chinese herbs. Scoop upmetal filings or gunpowder with the Palmscale's built in Scoop or pickup gems with its built in tweezers. Store your Palmscale in it'sincluded protective fabric pouch. The Palmscale is designed forprofessional work.

Style
The Palmscale is the most beautiful pocket scale in the world. Metallic or Rubberized colors with chrome accents, metal logos and hand-polished finishes. Attention is given to every detail.
Check with your retailer for the full array of Palmscale colors and styles. No matter what your application, there is a custom Palmscale for you!
Original
The Palmscale is the ongoing market leader. You'll see many scales in the market now that "resemble" the Palmscale - but look closely. None of them have our innovative features or patented technology. The Palmscale is - and always will be - the Original Modern Pocket Scale.
Patented
The Palmscale's auto-opening hydro-hinge and design is protected by multiple patents in several countries/regions including the USA, Canada, UK, and EU. The invention of the rechargeable scale with docking station has been filed for patent protection and is considered Patent Pending.

Words of Advice:

The PALMSCALE 6.0 is undoubtedly one of the coolest pocket scales ever created and the first of it’s kind. Please remember that this is a precision instrument. It is essential that you never drop, shake or otherwise mishandle this instrument. Electronic precision scales use delicate sensors that can easily be damaged if the scale is excessively shocked, dropped or overload. An abused scale will only work until it’s sensors are damaged, but a well kept scale will last for your lifetime.

Please be good to your PALMSCALE !

PALMSCALE "Last Ditched Effort" REPAIR GUIDE:
This is an extremely advanced repair guide for the Palmscale. These instructions are only to be used if you are absolutely sure your scale is "beyond repair" and you would like to make a last ditched effort to get it working again. It can only be used for scale problems caused by shock or overload that bends the load cell too far down.

  1. Turn the scale ON. "Err" may appear. Just turn it on anyway.
  2. Follow the instructions above to get to the gravitational random number.
  3. If the random number is higher then 1000, that means the load cell has been overloaded. You can try prying up on the tray until the random number (the AD Value) changes to a number lower then 1000 (ie 500 or 800). Basically you're bending the load cell back upwards trying to get the scale to come back to use.
  4. Turn the scale OFF (or follow the instructions above to complete the advanced calibration.
  5. Proceed to recalibrate the scale and hopefully it will work fine.

Please email us to let us know if these instructions have worked for you or if you found some other way to get your scale working again.

PALMSCALE "Flashing 88888" Underload Repair:
This will help you if your scale is flashing intermittently "88888". The flashing 88888 indicates that the scale has been underloaded. What this means is that the scale was dropped or shocked and the load cell was bent upwards. This can often be repaired by simply pressing down on the weighing platform to lightly bend the load cell back downwards. Be careful not to press too hard - basically you want to use just enough force to get the scale to work.

  1. Turn the scale ON (it will flash 88888)
  2. Press down on the tray with light-medium force and release. If the scale stops flashing 8888 and shows 0 (0.0) you are done. If the scale continues to flash 88888 then try pressing a bit harder, and repeat
  3. If you are unable to get the scale to work properly using this method then you must send the scale in for warranty replacement/repair. Please follow our warranty instructions.

Palmscale Specific Error Codes & Troubleshooting:

1) If the Display ever becomes locked on err, and the above guide does not help you to repair this error, then this is a fatal error code and indicates that the scale was shocked, dropped or otherwise damaged beyond user repair. The delicate weighing sensors have been damaged. You will have to follow the warranty instructions that came with your scale. Usually this happens when a scale has been shipped and improperly packed or mishandled by a shipping company.

2) If the display becomes locked on 8888, this often indicates low batteries. However sometimes it also may indicate a serious zero mark error. This means when you turn the scale on, it can't determine what zero is (a slight zero mark error will cause situation #2 above, but a serous zero mark error will cause the scale to not even be able to show 0.0 when you turn it on. First try new batteries, then try the advanced guide above. If neither of these things fix the error, the scale will have to be sent to us for replacement under our Lifetime/30 year warranty program.

Yes, we know that it absolutely "stinks" when a scale is broken beyond repair. The problem is that scales are much more delicate then other instruments (such as cell phones) and they are susceptible to damage from shock or overload. You can drop most cell phones many times and they will continue to work properly. However a scale is designed to measure loads, thus a shock is measured as a load and picked up by the internal sensors of the scale. Too high of a shock will permanently damage the sensors.

Sensors can only be replaced by our technicians in a laboratory style clean room facility

Please contact us to let us know if these instructions have worked for you or if you found some other way to get your scale working again.

DRAWING PAGE #2

Background of the Invention
The
present invention relates to a scale which possesses a flat ,compact
and portable housing construction, and more specifically pertains to a
scale lid mechanism which pivots a flat cover of the scale in a
predetermined controlled manner between a closed position, where the
cover overlays the weighing platform, and an open position, where the
cover is pivoted towards the rear of the scale.

Brief Summary of the Invention
[0001]
The hand-held scale of the present invention comprises a housing which
is of a generally rectangular, relatively flat, box-like structure and
also including a lid structure hingedly articulated to the housing and
incorporating a lid mechanism possessing a flat, plate-shaped cover
portion. The housing includes a pair of upwardly extending flange
elements at opposite sides thereof, each of which includes a short
inwardly extending trunnion-like projection. One of the projections is
of a circular shape, whereas the other projection is larger in
diameter, and projection contains a circular recess including a
horizontal rib extending radially from the bottom of the recess.

[0002] The lid
structure essentially comprises a generally rectangular flat plate
portion having an upper edge which curves rearwardly so as to extend
into a tubular portion which is adapted to form a hinge construction
for articulated connection of the lid structure with the trunnion-like
projections on the housing flanges.

[0003] The tubular
portion is provided with cylindrical blind bores which extend coaxially
towards each other from the opposite ends of the tubular portion, and
are separated by means of a wall forming the bottoms of the blind
bores. One of the cylindrical blind bores includes at its bottom a pair
of parallel spaced upstanding ribs defining a linear spacing there
between.

[0004] The opposite
edge of the flat plate portion of the lid structure includes a narrow
upstanding flange having an elongated aperture formed therein towards
one end thereof, which aperture is adapted to be engaged by the latch
element of a switch device.

[0005] Insertable
into the blind bore which contains at its bottom the projecting ribs
forming the spacing therebetween, is a helical coil spring, which is
preferably constituted of a spring steel, with both ends of the spring,
having the end portions thereof extending transversely across the
center of the diameter of the spring so as to form straight and
essentially rigid rod-like elements.

[0006] A damping
drum, which is of a hollow cylindrical construction having a recess cut
in at one open end thereof, and spaced protrusions defining spaces
therebetween at the opposite closed end is adapted to be inserted into
the blind bore so as to, in conjunction with the helical coil spring
form the lid mechanism for effectuating the pivoting movement of the
lid structure relative to the housing. The assembly of the components
of the lid mechanism into the blind bore so as to effectively
facilitate the controlled damped pivoting of the lid structure
comprises inserting the helical coil spring into the blind bore having
the spaced ribs therein, such that the leading end portion of the
spring which extends across the diameter thereof is clampingly engaged
in the spacing between the two ribs at the bottom of the blind bore,
which will prevent rotation of that end of the spring relative to the
bore and resultingly the lid structure.

[0007] The other end
of the spring which, similarly, possesses a transverse end piece
extending across the diameter thereof, is clampingly engaged in the
space between the protrusions at the closed end of the damping drum,
which is of a length so as to axially compress the spring when fully
inserted into the blind bore. Thus, the spring and the damping drum
have their interconnected ends secured against relative rotation.

[0008] The lid
structure containing the spring and damping drum in the bore and the
external cylindrical surface of the damping drum, wherein the surface
of the bore in that region may be roughened, serrated or ridged so as
to prevent outward leakage of the damping grease, is positioned between
the trunnion projections on the flange elements of the housing. This
causes the slot or recess formed in the open end of the damping drum to
engage over the rib formed in the trunnion which is adjacent thereto.
This will prevent relative rotation between the drum within bore
relative to the lid structure.

[0009] The closing
of the lid structure causes the elongated aperture in flange to be
engaged by a projecting ledge or tab of a slideable switch element of
the switch in the form of a plate member having a projection extending
through a slot in the front housing portion, and which is adapted to be
finger-actuated in opposition to the biasing latching force of a
spring, which is retained in the housing. Thus, upon pulling the switch
element, the tab disengages from the aperture and releases the lid
structure.

[0010] Inasmuch as
the helical coil spring in the bore has been previously torsionally
pre-stressed, the release of the switch element by pressing the latter
downwardly against the force of the biasing spring element in the
housing, imparts a torsional or rotational unwinding force to the coil
spring, so as to forcibly cause the lid structure to pivot or rotate
rearwardly into position.

[0011] The rate of
movement or speed in the rearward pivoting of the lid structure upon
the release thereof is controlled by means of the damping drum and the
damping grease arranged thereabout in contact with the inner surface of
the blind bore which, in essence, forms a damping cylinder. This
structure will slow down and counteract any tendency for rapid pivoting
movement of the lid structure, which could conceivably cause the scale
to bounce and possibly damage the delicate internal components or
electronics thereof. As indicated, the damping grease may be a highly
viscous oil or grease, or any similar suitable damping material which
will not readily leak from the open end of the blind bore forming the
damping cylinder.

[0012] In order to
close the scale, it is merely necessary to position the cover plate
portion over the scale weigh platform by manually pivoting the lid
structure forwardly about the hinge-forming trunnion elements or
projections until such time as the tab of the switch element engages
into the aperture of the cover and retains the lid structure in its
latched and closed position, releasing the cover portion and enabling
the lid mechanism to implement the previously described damped and
controlled pivoting motion into the position in which the cover plate
forms a stand for the scale.

[0013] The scale
further comprises a weighing tray, where the weighing tray comprises an
upper surface and a lower surface, and wherein, the lower surface
comprises a flange element, which is sized to fit about the weighing
platform. The upper surface is shaped such that the outer edge of the
upper surface is positioned above the scale housing, such that an
object having a greater surface area that the weighing platform can be
weighed.

Detailed Disclosure of the Invention
[0015] As can be ascertained from Figures 2 to 5, the portable,
hand-held scale 10 includes a housing 12 which is of a generally
rectangular, relatively flat box-like structure. The Figures illustrate
a lid structure 14 hingedly articulated to housing 12 and incorporating
a lid mechanism 16 possessing a flat, plate-shaped cover portion 18
represented in its closed and latched position over scale weighing
platform 20.

[0016] The lid
structure 14 as illustrated in detail in the drawing Figures 6(a) Ð
6(e) essentially comprises a generally rectangular flat plate portion
36 having an upper edge which curves rearwardly so as to extend into a
tubular portion 38, which is adapted to form a hinge construction for
articulated connection of the lid structure 14 with the trunnion-like
projections 28, 30 on the housing flanges 24, 26.

[0017] The tubular
portion 38 is provided with cylindrical blind bores 40, 42 which extend
coaxially towards each other from the opposite ends 44,46 of the
tubular portion, and are separated by means of a wall 48 forming the
bottoms of the blind bores 40, 42.

[0018] One of the
cylindrical blind bores 40 includes at its bottom a pair of parallel
spaced upstanding ribs 50 defining a linear spacing 52 therebetween,
the function of which is described more specifically hereinbelow.

[0019] The opposite
edge 54 of the flat plate portion 36 of the lid structure 14 includes a
narrow upstanding flange 54 having an elongated aperture 56 formed
therein towards one end thereof, which aperture is adapted to be
engaged by the latch element 58 of a switch device 60, as described
hereinbelow.

[0020] Insertable
into the blind bore 40 which contains at its bottom the projecting ribs
50 forming the spacing 52 therebetween, is a helical coil spring 62,
which is preferably constituted of a spring steel, and which is
represented in Figures 7(a) and 7(b), with both ends of the spring 62,
having the end portions 64 thereof extending transversely across the
center of the diameter of the spring so as to form straight and
essentially rigid rod-like elements.

[0021] As shown in
specific detail in Figures 8(a) - 8(c), a damping drum 70, which is of
a hollow cylindrical construction having a recess 72 cut in at one open
end 74 thereof, and spaced protrusions 76 defining spaces 78
therebetween at the opposite closed end 80, is adapted to be inserted
into the blind bore 40 so as to, in conjunction with the helical coil
spring 62 form the lid mechanism 16 for effectuating the pivoting
movement of the lid structure 14 relative to the housing 12. The
assembly of the components of the lid mechanism 16 into the blind bore
40 so as to effectively facilitate the controlled damped pivoting of
the lid structure comprises inserting the helical coil spring 62 into
the blind bore 40 having the spaced ribs 50 therein, such that the
leading end portion 64 of the spring, which extends across the diameter
thereof, is clampingly engaged in the spacing 52 between the two ribs
50 at the bottom of the blind bore 40, which will prevent rotation of
that end of the spring 62 relative to the bore 40 and resultingly the
lid structure 14.

[0022] The other end
of the spring 62 which, similarly, possesses a transverse end piece
extending across the diameter thereof, is clampingly engaged in the
space 78 between the protrusions 76 at the closed end 80 of the damping
drum 70, which is of a length so as to axially compress the spring 62
when fully inserted into the blind bore 40. Thus, the spring 62 and the
damping drum 70 have their interconnected ends secured against relative
rotation.

[0023] The lid
structure 14 containing the spring 62 and damping drum 70 in the bore
40 and the external cylindrical surface of the damping drum 70, wherein
the surface of the bore 40 in that region may be roughened, serrated or
ridged so as to prevent outward leakage of the damping grease 84, is
positioned between the trunnion projections 28, 30 on the flange
elements 24, 26 of the housing. This causes the slot or recess 72
formed in the open end of the damping drum 70 to engage over the rib 34
formed in the trunnion which is adjacent thereto. This will prevent
relative rotation between the drum 70 within bore 40 relative to the
lid structure 14.

[0024] The closing
of the lid structure 14 causes the elongate aperture 56 in flange 54 to
be engaged by a projecting ledge or tab 88 of a slideable switch
element 90 of the switch in the form of a plate member having a
projection 92 extending through a slot 94 in the front housing portion,
and which is adapted to be finger-actuated in opposition to the biasing
latching force of a spring 96 which is retained in the housing 12.
Thus, upon pulling the switch element 90, the tab 88 disengages from
the aperture 56 and releases the lid structure 14.

[0025] Inasmuch as
the helical coil spring 62 in the bore 40 has been previously
torsionally pre-stressed, the release of the switch element 90 by
pressing the latter downwardly against the force of the biasing spring
element 96 in the housing 12, imparts a torsional or rotational
unwinding force to the coil spring 62, so as to forcibly cause the lid
structure 14 to pivot or rotate rearwardly into position as shown in
Figure 5.

[0026] The rate of
movement or speed in the rearward pivoting of the lid structure 14 upon
the release thereof is controlled by means of the damping drum 70 and
the damping grease 84 arranged thereabout in contact with the inner
surface of the blind bore 40 which, in essence, forms a damping
cylinder. This structure will slow down and counteract any tendency for
rapid pivoting movement of the lid structure 14 which could conceivably
cause the scale to bounce and possibly damage the delicate internal
components or electronics thereof. As indicated, the damping grease 84
may be a highly viscous oil or grease, or any similar suitable damping
material which will not readily leak from the open end of the blind
bore 40 forming the damping cylinder.

[0027] In order to
close the scale, it is merely necessary to position the cover plate
portion 36 over the scale weigh platform 20 by manually pivoting the
lid structure 14 forwardly about the hinge-forming trunnion elements or
projections 28, 30 until such time as the tab 88 of the switch element
98 engages into the aperture 56 of the cover and retains the lid
structure 14 in its latched and closed position, as shown in Figure 3,
releasing the cover portion and enabling the lid mechanism 16 to
implement the previously described damped and controlled pivoting
motion into position.

[0028] In an
alternative embodiment, as shown in Figures 9(a) and 9(b), the scale
10, further comprises a weighing tray 100. The weighing tray 100,
comprises an upper surface 102 and a lower surface 104, and wherein,
the lower surface 104 comprises a flange element 106, which is sized to
fit about the weighing platform 20. The upper surface 102 is shaped
such that the outer edged of the upper surface 102 is positioned above
the scale housing 10, such that an object having a greater surface area
than the weighing platform can be weighed.

[0029] Figure 1
depicts a simplified block diagram of a scale apparatus according to
this invention. Here is shown an object 120 positioned on a weighing
platform 20. The weighing platform 20 is associated with a base member
130, which is positioned on a horizontal reference plane. An object 120
causes the weighing platform 20 to move downwardly with respect to the
plane or base 130. The weighing platform 20 and base member 130 are
conventional scale components and many examples of suitable apparatus
exist in the prior art.

[0030] As is
conventional, the weighing platform 20 responds by moving downwardly
according to the weight of the object 120 to exert a force or pressure
on a transducer 110 coupled between the weighing platform 20 and the
base 130.

[0031] The
transducer 110 or load cell can be a number of different devices for
converting a pressure or a force into an electrical signal. As such,
the transducer 110 may compromise a Wheatstone bridge configuration
employing piezoresistive elements or other pressure converting devices
to provide a varying electrical signal indicative of the weight of the
object 120 on the weighing platform 20. As such, the transducer 110
supplies an analog signal in terms of a voltage or a current having a
magnitude which varies according to the weight of the object 120. The
weight of the object 120 is displayed on the digital display 140. Where
the weight of the object 120 can be selectively 150 displayed in grams,
ounces, or other known units of measuring weights.

[0032] While there
has been shown and described what is considered to be a preferred
embodiment of the invention, it will, of course, be understood that
various modifications and changes in form or detail could readily be
made without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is
therefore, intended that the invention be not limited to the exact form
and detail herein shown and described, nor to anything less than the
whole of the invention herein disclosed.

PALMSCALE 6.0 REPROGRAMMING
These instructions are only for Palmscale 6.0. Your box should say "Palmscale 6.0" and your quick user guide (inside the cover of the scale) should say "Palmscale 6.0".

Pre-read this entire section before you begin. These instructions should only to be used if you changed the settings in your Palmscale by accident, or if your scale is showing ERR, or if it is giving false or inaccurate readings. Follow these instructions to reset the scale and change the settings back to the correct settings This is not an easy procedure and must only be done if necessary.

In Programming mode pressing the MODE key will increase the blinking number, Pressing the TARE key will shift the blinking number to the next line. If you press the MODE key it simply increases the number. So if the blinking number is 1 and you press the MODE key, it will increase that number to 2. The TARE key shifts the blinking digit to the next line.

PALMSCALE "Last Ditched Effort" REPAIR GUIDE
This is an extremely advanced repair guide for the Palmscale. Theseinstructions are only to be used if you are absolutely sure your scaleis "beyond repair" and you would like to make a last ditched effort toget it working again. It can only be used for scale problems caused byshock or overload that bends the load cell too far down.

  1. Turn the scale ON. "Err" may appear. Just turn it on anyway.
  2. Follow the instructions above to get to the gravitational random number.
  3. If the random number is higher then 1000, that means the loadcell has been overloaded. You can try prying up on the tray until therandom number (the AD Value) changes to a number lower then 1000 (ie500 or 800). Basically you're bending the load cell back upwards tryingto get the scale to come back to use.
  4. Turn the scale OFF (or follow the instructions above to complete the advanced calibration.
  5. Proceed to recalibrate the scale and hopefully it will work fine.

Please email us to let us know if these instructions have worked for you or if you found some other way to get your scale working again.

PALMSCALE "Flashing 88888" Underload Repair

Please email us to let us know if these instructions have worked for you or if you found some other way to get your scale working again.

Sensors can only be replaced by our technicians in a laboratory style clean room facility.

Hi, I had a Micro-tech scale the small one that's round, well dropped it and it was gone.... Err Anyways, I picked up one of your Palmscales from a friend for $10! But when I got it home It had a error message.... I was pissed so I went to your site to see what the hell was wrong with it. Then I found your instructions to repair it.

Followed the instructions to see "AD value" it was 1946!!!!!!!

I figured the higher it was the more it was tweaked so I started prying with a quarter. Started by bending up each edge to see which way it was tweaked found the spot that seemed to lower the AD the most and lifted hard... Thought I broke it heard a small stressing of plastic; and it went off.

It was the auto-off so I turned it back on got the AD down to 1456, its working. Long story short, after some prying with a quarter I got the AD to 550! and she weighs great. You got a life long customer, I just ordered one of your Flipscales too.
